How to Recognize a Broken Sprinkler Head

A broken sprinkler head may leave a dry area while sending water somewhere else. Look for a missing nozzle, visible damage, bubbling around the base or spray that no longer reaches its intended area.

Describe the symptom first

Note which zone is affected and whether nearby heads behave normally. One weak head may have a different cause from an entire zone losing pressure. Do not extend the whole zone’s runtime to compensate for visible damage.

Match the repair to the equipment

A replacement needs to suit the body, nozzle, spray pattern and zone design. A head that fits the threaded connection is not automatically the right choice for coverage. Ask whether the riser or surrounding pipe also needs attention.

Check the result

When operation is permitted, verify the repaired area and adjacent coverage. Confirm that the head clears the ground and avoids unnecessary spray onto paths or walls.
